Step 1: Citizen Files Petition 

• US citizen or green card holder submits Form I-130 

• Purpose: Petition for spouse and prove marriage validity 

Step 2: Spouse Files for Green Card 

• Spouse applies for permanent residency based on marriage 

• Note: Spouses of US citizens can file anytime, spouses of green card holders     should wait for available visa 

Step 3: Biometrics Appointment 

• Spouse may be required to register biometrics 

• Location: Application Support Center (ASC) 

Step 4: Interview 

• Couple may be called for an interview 

• Location: USCIS Field Office 

• Purpose: Validate marriage and confirm application 

Step 5: Request for Evidence 

• USCIS may ask for additional supporting documents by mail 

• Respond promptly with requested information 

Step 6: Receive Decision

• USCIS reviews all submitted evidence 

• Applicant receives final decision on green card application 

• Possible outcomes: Approval, Denial, or Request for Further Evidence
